1st Grade: Students have learned "just right" strategies to choose reading selections for themselves. By using the 5Finger test, picture walking, and the just right rule,
they
have become adept at choosing books for their reading level. Students are encouraged to take "just right" books every other week during library time and to
read at home to become more fluid and to reenforce reading time. The children have also been exposed to many different authors this year. Some special
favorites are Seymour Simon, Kevin Henkes, and Mo Willems.

2nd Grade: Students have learned to use "tools" in books. Those "tools" consist of Table of Contents, Bold Headings, Index, Glossary, and Captions, and Maps and
charts. The children have learned that these tools help them to find information quickly and to understand the information more easily. They have become
familiar with reference books like the dictionary, almanac, and encyclopedia. They have explored poetry and been able to share their favorite selections
with the class. The children have also been exposed to different authors such as Lita Judge and Patricia Polacco. It has been a busy year.
3rd Grade: Students have spent time exploring poetry and fiction titles. Much of this term has been spent working on a research project. Each 3rd grader spent time
learning about a country of their choice. Using graphic organizers and taking notes, the children gathered facts about their countries. They were then
challenged to pretend that they were 3rd graders from their countries and each wrote a journal entry using all the information. These writing pieces will go into
the classroom writing portfolios.
